Two Passovers, One Jesus
“Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God. Believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, you may be also. John 14:1-3
It was Jesus’ first visit to Jerusalem. Multitudes were gathering from all over Judea to celebrate the Passover. As they came close to the city, all could see the magnificent temple, towering over the surrounding countryside and gleaming in the sunlight. Jesus watched the priests performing the temple services, sacrificing the lamb at the morning and evening services. “Day by day He saw their meaning more clearly. Every act seemed to be bound up with His own life. New impulses were awakening within Him. Silent and absorbed, He seemed to be studying out a great problem. The mystery of His mission was opening to the Saviour.” (DA pg 78)
But the priests and rulers were expecting the type of Messiah that Jesus was meant to be. They were looking for a conquer. Someone to free them from Roman rule. Jesus knew what was in store for Him the last time he entered Jerusalem. Once again it was the time of the Passover. Jesus washed His disciples feet and broke bread with them in the upper room. This time He was to be the sacrificial lamb, dying for the whole world, the Gentiles as well as the Jews. But Jesus didn’t just die. He also rose again. The cross was only the beginning. The end will be His second coming when he comes to take all those who love Him back to heaven with Him, where we will live with Him forever.
