Hebrews (part 3): Christ, the Greatest – He is the Bridge Across the Great Divide

Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. Hebrews 3:1-3

No man was more revered by the ancient Jews than was Moses. God had spoken through visions and dreams to the prophets, but with Moses He had spoken face to face. On Mount Sinai, Moses received the Ten Commandments, written by God and handed to him directly from the hand of God. Now in Hebrews 3, the writer asks us to consider Jesus Christ, someone who stood even closer to God than did Moses.

In Chapter One,, Hebrews delineated the divinity of Jesus – superior to both the prophets and the angels.  The second chapter continued with the idea that as well as being divine, Jesus is also human. These two opposite characteristics are linked together in the third chapter to show that because Jesus is both fully divine and fully human, He is the only one that can form a bridge between God and man.

Hebrews then sends each of us a warning. We have the opportunity to either accept Jesus or reject Him. “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” (Heb 3:7,8). Today is the most important day in our life, as it may be our only chance to accept Jesus.
