Never Give Up
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 9:1
On June 3, 1940 the last British troops had just been miraculously evacuated from Dunkirk. The ships would return the next day to rescue as many of the French rearguard as possible. Later that month France would surrender to Germany and the only thing keeping the Germans out of Britain was the English Channel. Dunkirk had not been a victory, it had been a military disaster wrenched from the jaws of complete defeat. On the afternoon of June 4, Churchill stood before the House of Commons to inform parliament of the true position of the nation. In his speech he uttered the famous wounds: “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
We are also in a battle, not with earthly things, but with the powers of good and evil. We live comfortable lives with little persecution. However, we cannot risk losing the spirit of Abraham and Moses and Paul. We do not know what the future holds, but we do know that difficult times are on the way. The persistence and perseverance that we need to get through them can only come from our faith in God. Jesus provides the backbone. he is the author and finisher of our faith. He is the only one that can give us the power to hold on. Hold onto Him and never give up.
“The greatest want of the world is the want of men—men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall.”
