Lift Up Your Heads
Lift up your heads, O you gates!
Lift up, you everlasting doors!
And the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord of hosts,
He is the King of glory.
Psalm 24:9-10
Psalm 24 was written by David for the occasion of moving the Ark of the Covenant into the tabernacle at Jerusalem. The Ark was a symbol of God’s presence. However, the Ark could not possibly show the greatness of God. God was the creator of the world and everything in it. He was strong and mighty and well able to fight for the Israelites in battle. God was so big that the gates would have to be enlarged to enable him to fit through them. God wanted to dwell with his people, but God wants more than just our presence in church. He also wants our hearts. With His help we can have clean hands and a pure heart. What God wants most of all is for us to seek Him.
For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6
